Hello, I'm running Lion on a 2011 Mac mini. I wanted to play some Warcraft 3, so I checked if it runs on intel Macs - and yup, it's universal. So I downloaded it from Battle.net and while the game itself runs on intel, the installer is still PPC only - which means I can't install it on Lion as Rosetta is no longer there. Cannot install or update using Mac OSX 10.7 (lion). So therefore game is now broken! Currently breaches UK Trading Standards by claiming to work on 10.39 or higher on the box (which it doesn't) Reply to this review. This past summer Blizzard Entertainment released Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos simultaneously for Mac and Windows. In all that time, however, there's never been a playable demo of the game available for public consumption. Now there is.

Blizzard today announced the release of a playable Macintosh version of the Warcraft III demo that lets Mac users get a taste of the role-playing strategy title before they put down their money. The Mac version follows the PC demo version's release earlier this week.
Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos is the latest installment of Blizzard Entertainment's popular strategy game series. The game returns players to the fantasy world of Azeroth, a land populated by humans and orcs who are pitted in a seemingly endless struggle. The Undead and Night Elves join the fray as a new evil is unleashed on the land. Players can participate in a single-player campaign that puts you in each different race's role over time, or you can play online against other Mac and PC users alike through Battle.net, Blizzard's own free online play service.
Rated 'T' for 'Teen' by the ESRB, the new installment of the Warcraft series is billed by Blizzard as a 'role playing strategy' (RPS) game, as players focus their attentions on Heroes and small groups of soldiers and units than in past Warcraft games, although the manipulation of resources and the creation of strong offensive and defensive forces is still a vital part of a successful game.
The demo itself provides Warcraft neophytes with a two-mission tutorial featuring on of the game's main Heroes, and also incorporates three all-new missions that follow the story of the Orcs' journey to Kalimdor. What's more, demo players can also play online through Battle.net.
System requirements for the demo call for Mac OS 9 or higher, or Mac OS X 10.1.3 or higher; G3/400 or better; 128MB RAM; 16MB ATI or Nvidia 3D graphics card; 120MB hard disk space.

Nice, I'd like to run Warcraft III on my Intel mac too, but unfortunately it crashes.
While this hint might help some, it has no effect on my situation since I don't have the LiveType component :(
Perhaps I'll just install it in Boot Camp...

Have you checked your console.log? That's where I found out that this component was messing up Warcraft III.
I also don't have the LiveType component, and WC3 won't even run on my MBP. It will run fine BootCamped, though.
I'm thinking now that perhaps WC3 won't run because I've stripped PPC code? I could reinstall OSX to check, but that's not likely to happen anytime soon...

Yes, that's probably the reason. If you want to run Rosetta apps, you need PPC or Universal versions of all the libraries, components and plugins they load.
This could interest some: I had the same crashing problem, but on a PowerBook G4. It turns out that the culprit was the latest version of DivX codec, istalled by the package downloaded from divx.com.
Once I removed the DivX framework from my library, everything worked fine.

Thanks for this hint. This also cures my Warcraft III installation.
Have you written to Blizzard about it?

As of yet, I have not, but I plan on writing to both Blizzard and Apple.

Good luck guys... I'm waiting for a Universal, but...

I'll add a 'runs fine on my Intel mini'.
Buuuut, Frozen Throne won't run more than four minutes before crashing horribly.

Reminds me of a funny story: I just received a MBP [from work], and over the weekend, went to Apple Store to find a game for it.
Had to ask, since it seemed there weren't any games compatible with Intel macs. Apple Store person goes off to ask, comes back with 'here it is ...'
There was one. One game that's compatible with any new consumer Mac you can purchase. The rest of the stuff on the shelves was for PPC Macs. I thought that was funny, but not fun.
I don't recall what game it was; it didn't seem like my kinda thing. Maybe it was this WarCraft game.

What clown designed the iPod calendar reminder, which won't show you the Location field? Guess they always meet in the same room at Apple?

I have had my macbook for a little over a week. I wanted to try a game so I downloaded the Warcraft III demo and it worked fine. I then went out and bought the game and it has worked great, no problems. I havent even installed the latest patches because they wouldnt install for some reason so I didnt bother. I have v1.00.
WHY?
WCIII runs under OS X just fine.
WCIII runs under OS X just fine.
So I got my new MacBook Pro last weekend, and that night Warcraft III and Frozen Throne was installed, updated via BattleNet and I was network gaming in seconds... maybe it just happened to be because it was a brand new copy of Warcraft... but I didn't have and still don't have any issues getting it running.
Installed both Warcraft III and Frozen Throne on my Mac Mini solo. Both ran fine but I didn't play long. I'm out of practice and got my head handed to me really quickly.
I'VE FIGURED IT OUT!!!!!!!!!!!
This explained a certain part but not all of it. IT'S QUICKTIME THAT'S THE PROBLEM! It also does this if DivX is installed. Maybe it's an incompatibility with codecs?
Anyway, I'd recommend that you'd archive all the non-default components if you have crash problems. It could be an incompatibility with the intel vs ppc (wc3 isn't universal,) but ALL the components in quicktime that aren't default, archive, and then unarchive them when you're done. I'm sure someone can whip up a shell script to do this, too, huh?

Arnoct is correct. Warcraft III uses QuickTime for the video. If you have the latest DivX codec the game will immediately crash when ran.
This problem also occurs with DivX - and can be fixed without having to archive or delete folders.
Steps to blocking unwanted folders without deleting or archiving them:
1. Start a Terminal
2. At the command prompt enter the command 'sudo chmod 000 /Library/QuickTime/DivX Decoder.component' and press Enter
3. Then enter the following command 'sudo chmod 000 /Library/QuickTime/DivX Encoder.component' and press Enter
The 'chmod' command changes the access rights of the folders so nothing can access the folders or files contained in the folders.
Note: If you want to set the folder right back to the way it was before use the command: 'sudo chmod 775 FOLDERNAME'
When you use either of these commands you will often be asked for the root password. It is possible to change the rights via Finder but it involves changing file owerships, which I wouldn't recommend.

Try renaming the 'Movies' folder in your Warcraft installation folder to 'Moovies' or something.
That will make sure Warcraft doesn't try to use Quicktime to access the movies and should stop it from crashing.
Worked for me at least... A better solution than removing divx or access to it, since i kinda like it.

Hi. I followed this to the tee and indeed Warcraft II worked great. However I can't now re-enable the DivX codec..typing in the command: sudo chmod 775 FOLDERNAME gives the message no such file or directory. Am I a complete nummy and missing something here?
Missing my DivX..sigh

I have DivX.
I also have just transferred my Warcraft III files from an iMac G4 to a MBP 15' 2.16GHz. It was really crabby. The menu showed up as a black screen, but the armored hand cursor was visible.
I reinstalled from the CD, and downloaded the latest full patch from http://www.blizzard.com/support/?id=mwr0738p#universal
The dang patch wouldn't find my game, so I moved the patch into the folder where the actual warcraft III.app is, and double clicked it. it worked like a charm.
to test, I opened a DivX movie, and it works fine still.
Maybe that's all it takes?
W
Then I opened the game. Wonderful.
I don't know about the quicktime file you are talking about, as I don't have it. I don't have quicktime pro, though... just the freebee version, I don't know if that matters.

Free Downloads For Mac
I talked to a friend of mine about it, and you can just download Perian.component from www.perian.org. It all all the codec you need for QuickTime, and Warcraft III doesn't try to open it as it launches.
